Journey in Global Platform

A girl completely un- known about the environment came in the global platform with lots of hope and excitements.   My quest for Knowledge regarding ‘Social Media use’ leads me here in this Platform.  At the very first day of the class, we twelve participants gathered in a beautiful room, two young people came in the class and informed us they are going to facilitate us for whole 21 days training. I was little shocked because I thought the facilitator are like little old people but I was happy because the two smart people Luna and Suran are going to facilitating for us.
I have beautiful memories with this place, this place provides me the real knowledge about social media using. Before coming here, I just used web links for making fun and searching some information but thanks to this program which acknowledged me to comprehend my knowledge.  Another important thing is having fun with wonderful people over here who sometimes make me laughed and sometimes make me to think on.   I found the training is all about learning by doing. Learn and do something for social change and awareness.
At last, I would like to  give huge thank to two smart Social media trainers; Luna and Suran for awaking and spurring us to use social media for social mobilization and of course my friends who give me good company for 21 days.  I dare not try to forget wonderful people whom I met in this place.
I came here with empty hand, and returning back with handful of knowledge of using social media, good memories, and commemoration of wonderful people. I am going to miss these memories.

Teaching Grammar: Exploring Past and Present Realities

Renuka Dhakal, KU
renudhakal@gmail.com
Celce- Murcia and Hilles (1988) define language as “a type of rule-governed behavior and it is a subset of those rules which govern the configuration that the morphology and syntax of a language assume”. It is obvious that grammar is the clusters of rules which govern and which shape the language. It is well known to all that grammar is one element that gives a shape to language. In this article, I am reflecting on the strategies that I used while learning grammar in school and current pedagogical practice I adopt as an EFL teacher. It expresses my understanding of grammar teaching and learning from my school days to the present professional life as a teacher and a university student.
Teaching grammar communicatively in the EFL setting like ours is an interesting topic. I would like to reflect on it as it is associated with my academic and professional endeavor.  Learning grammar struck me from my school days. In school I couldn’t perform well in grammar in Nepali and English both. I, therefore, would hesitate to speak and write in English. Even after so many years when I as a teacher look at my students’ performance there has been little improvement in this area.
In school grammar teaching was based on rote learning: drilling and memorization. My teacher taught us grammar through the use of the deductive method. He would write a set of rules on the blackboard and we were expected to memorize all patterns at all cost. Let’s imagine how horrible it might have been! Despite being able to produce almost all grammatical rules, I was unable to produce sentences. When I compare the way we were taught with the way we are trained to teach these days, I feel that this practice of imitation, repetition and memorization has become outdated, especially in this globalized context where learning English for communication has got the top priority .
It is still fresh in my memory how puzzled and confused I was when I could not produce meaningful sentences out of the practiced structures. My teacher once asked all the students to make sentences using the present perfect tense.  I came up with a sentence like, “I have writing a letter”. It was one of the common mistakes other friends also made. Later I realized that students pick up the progressive form more quickly than the perfect form. The errors like this can also be attributed to the lack of adequate exposure, and practice and production opportunities.
The question can be raised, “Why students often have the habit of using the progressive form where the perfect is required?”  As my understanding says, the progressive form is easier to make since it implies +-ing and more flexible than the perfect form. The perfect tense involves more complex grammatical operation. I think our teaching should be informed by the most commonly committed errors like this.  Only correcting them on the surface level without reaching the root cause fails to yield any fruitful result.
I am teaching English to lower secondary students.  I have been facing the same problems on the part of my students too. Recently I spent 10 days to teach the different forms of tense and its use in sentences. I found that my students were making the errors similar to those I would make in school. They could produce correct structures but when it came to their use in speaking and writing, their sentences were replete with errors. The insights that I have got from this is that the problem lies in our traditional concept of teaching grammar, that is, teaching grammar means to have students learn the rules rather than use them in their speech and writing. If we use the same methods, problems are never solved. Teachers and students both should realize the fact that grammar is more than a set of formal rules. It is inseparable from meaning, function and context.
No doubt, there are different ways of teaching and learning grammar. Among them the communicative way can be the best one. Therefore, these days my main concern is how the communicative method can be best employed to teach and learn grammar. I find the similar concern in Master and Liu (2003) who conclude that the need to teach grammar has not really been a question for most teacher educators, how to teach grammar has been a great challenge due to the complexities of the subject matter and the difficulties in approaching it. As an English language teacher, I also feel that grammar teaching is a daunting task because I was taught grammar through traditional way but I have been studying that it should be taught through the approaches such as Communicative Approach and Task Based Approach.
In the EFL setting like ours, grammar should be taught for and through communication. As a result, learners can develop all components of communicative competence in a balanced way.   Grammar teaching should value the role of games, songs, stories and dialogs,  realia, problem-solving activities, and communicative techniques such as role-play, simulation, and strip stories and so on. While doing so, such resources and techniques provide learners with opportunities to integrate grammar with vocabulary and all language skills.

Ten Week 's Journey

Building Teaching Skills through Interactive Web

Ending refers to beginning

It is the last blog that I am writing for Building Teaching Skills through Interactive Web. But what I learnt from this course is beginning to implement in the real setting. Learning is never ending process, it goes on and goes and never stop. Only the change in learning is its form and its multi- name.  And what I learnt from this class is one of the forms of learning and when I will take another course, it will be another form of learning. However, whatever form of learning we use, all gives us something new and which insight us with new way of thinking. You might be surprise why I say learning is a ‘form’. I like to say it is form because the final destination of the learning is encounter with the inherent knowledge of the world and understand the system of the world. Therefore, this course is one of the forms for me which not only teach me about the technology but also help to build the relationship between multi cultural groups of people.

For me learning is essential or basis needs but besides it making the good relationship is great things. By talking about the technology, just for learning, we can learn from anywhere, but the way of delivering and style of learning is varying and that variation  brings uniqueness in learning and if the any course has unique features, it not only provides ideas but also create enthusiasm to learn something. For me this course is unique and it energies   me to learn new ideas of using technology in teaching and learning field. Moreover I am very happy with our facilitator Robert who had managed our course very well. For that I would like to convey my sincere thank to Robert for helping us for entire course duration.

To sum up, of our class, it is the wonderful time for me; this course is the initial door, which helps me to open many doors in future. Previously, I say “yes technology is important” but now my way of thinking is changed and now I say “wow technology”.

Wow technology to open the new doors

Wow technology to energies me to be creative

Wow technology to help me to build the relationship with multi- cultural friends

Wow technology to encounter me with world

Wow technology to link me with innovative personalities

Wow technology to enhancing my knowledge

Wow technology to show me the multiple way of learning

Wow technology to make me to think differently

Wow….wow….wow what a wonderful time I have with you technology

You tied up me in such a way from where I never want to release.

And it is the lovely gift for me to stay with you forever.

Importance of Technology in Teaching and Learning

Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change
Stephen Hawking

As Hawkins, intelligent are those who can go with change.  As Hawkins’s I also believe that change is the rule of universe.  You may ask me why I use the word change. Yes absolutely, in our teaching and learning field also change is needed. We are often talking about the change in education field, but we are still using the same traditional way of teaching and learning mythology.  Especially, developing country like Nepal, it has still been difficult to utilized new way of technology since we are in the crawling phase.  These days some of the economically well educational intuitions has been introduced the technology in teaching and learning pedagogy, although I fully believe in future every educational intuition will adapt the new way of technology and methodology in teaching and learning arena.

Talking about my involvement in building teaching skills through interactive web class was precious for me. It is completely new kind of experience, which has help me to encounter with technological word.  Before joining in this class I just used web technology for searching some information and maintain the relationship between people. But after becoming the part of this course, I realized the new way of teaching and learning pedagogy.

Technology plays the vital role in human life, we all are becoming the member of the technology family, in order that our basis need to maintain healthy relationship with this family, we just need to be curious and smart to use it properly so that it helps us to explore the new sphere   of knowledge and opportunity.
As being the learner  of interactive web technology, now I have built more confident that in coming days I will use different kinds of technology in teaching and learning fields and raise the awareness to others about importance of technology in teaching and learning field.

Try to see the new things roaming around you and when you see it, immediately adapt it if it helpful for you.

Tell me, I forget
Show me, I remember
Involve me, I understand

By Confucius

Network me, I grow and help others go

 by my  assistant professorial

As like the above extract teaching and learning process goes on.  Teachers always  play the role of  facilitator, whenever the difficulties comes  teachers are ready to guide the students.

Reflective Journal of Seven week

How fast time goes on, I am thinking it’s just been one week in Web skills class but it has been already seven weeks. But anyway this class has been going on tremendously well. I have got different new ideas about using different websites as a teaching material as well as through the regular use of such websites we can foster our students English language learning capacity.

I seldom use internet in my class to teach my students due to that my school is not well equipped by such technological facility. However, sometimes I use my own laptop and internet card to teach new items of English language to my students.  Now I am realizing that my all students should get the chance of use web technology in their learning tools. For that I am planning to raise the awareness and share about the importance of web technology in teaching and learning arena in my school.

This week in web skills class we especially dealt on learners’ autonomy. Generally the term autonomy itself clear to understand what is learners’ autonomy.  I think a good teacher can cultivate his/ her students towards ‘self learning’ so that students themselves understand the importance of self learning and they themselves unravel their problems. Therefore, autonomy is necessary to enhance the inner quality of the students for that we teachers should play the role of good facilitator.

4th week on web class

It was great weekend on web skills course. I have spent much of my time to search different websites which is useful for my teaching as well learning carrier. In the process of searching website I got chance to learn about Steve Jobs. I am really impressed by his quotation,

“Don’t let the noise of others’ opinion drown out your inner voice everything is secondary”.

Through the continuous use of web technology, we will encounter with world and our way of thinking would be wider. And if we are able to transplant the seeds of importance and needs of web technology on the mind of our students, diffidently, they would grab the knowledge of the world.

Finally, I leant many things from the class. I made technology enhance lesson plan, discussed on the reading, writing and vocabulary skills and gave the brief description of the project work.

In one word the class was learnable .

With Love,

Third Week Reflection

This third week is really great for me. Week by week the level of working and understanding is increasing. First week, I had just an introductory web class.  Second week; I designed the basic concept of project work and ABCD objective. This week I reviewed other's project work, recommend different websites to learn ‘speaking’, ‘listening’ and ‘pronunciation’. Similarly, I created my account in Delicious dot com.

I enjoyed in all tasks assigned by our instructor Mr. Robert. For the completion of project work, I reviewed the project of Aleyda Linares, National Pedagogical University, Honduras. She did really great job in terms of familiarized students in web technology to improve their English language, similarly, I found very interesting to create an account in Delicious dot com. It is really precious website for us to keep valuable and important website and different study recourses’’ safely. Moreover, discuss on the nice net , read other friends work and comment on others work is very interesting for me.

Overall the class of Building teaching skills through interactive web is very learnable, useable, and practicable for me. I learnt not only about project work but also using different search engine in our teaching and learning academia.

Second week Reflection

Wow, it’s been fantastic experience for me; I have spent tremendous two weeks in building teaching skill through interactive web skills course. At the very first week, I was not completely aware of the terms and condition regarding the course, even though I have done the entire task on time. In comparison with first week, I am feeling that I am being little more expert to use this course in a proper way. This week I have learnt and done some of the valuable work which is prominently use in teaching and learning arena.

I was really happy, while doing work on ABCD. I have already had some of the ideas of ABCD but I don’t have the practical knowledge regarding the object.  This task really helped me to enhance my teaching ability and aware me with new way of teaching. Similarly, project work was also very appealing tasks to use web in teaching and learning activities. As I understand, using web technology for teaching and reading purpose makes both teacher and students dynamic. Therefore, every teachers and students should have access of web technology in their teaching and learning pedagogy to encounter with the world. Moreover, discussion on nice net and view others colleague’s blog was really interesting work.
I am really pleased with the class.

Week 1: Reflection

Dear all,

I am very much happy to be a part of online teacher training course. This is my first experience ever have about  web skills course through online mode. Initially, I was confused regarding this particular course because I wasn't used to online course. Before, introduce on this course, for me web was just to search information and to maintain the communication to others. But now it has becoming one of the essential parts to develop my professionalism and academic leadership as well.

As a professional teacher, I am currently engaged in teaching English as Second Language in the Nepalese EFL( English as Foreign Language) setting. Reflecting my experiences while creating blog, it was trouble for me since it has been too long that I have not been using this blog. Previously, I created a blog from http://blogspott.com, but I could not use for a long since I was not aware of importance and usefu
lness of blog in language pedagogy.

Now, I want to give my sincere thanks to my dear instructor Mr. Elliott for providing me guidelines. My aphorism is on teaching, therefore, I believe this course will help me to  make the classroom more technology friendly.

thank you.

Best Regard,

Realistic Renuka
